Origin of State Name |
Louisiane was the name given by the 17th century French explorer
René-Robert Cavelier. The Spanish version of the name was Luisiana
and the present name evolved from a combination of these.

The Pelican State The nickname is after the native coastal bird, the
pelican.

Interesting Facts |
Parts of the Mississippi River delta plain near New Orleans lie
below sea level. More than one-half of the species of birds in
North America are resident in Louisiana or spend a portion of their
migration there. On January 8, 1815, a large British force stormed
New Orleans, but was thrown back by forces commanded by Major General
Andrew Jackson.
