In New York Times, May 1, 1873, there were stories about President Grant's second term in the White House, Indian attacks California, reports of cholera and small pox, reports of lynchings, and lots of society news!
There were ads for work for women. The ads were cooks, laundresses, nurses for children, but not for nurses to care for the sick.
There was no mention that the first School of Nursing in the U.S opened that day at Bellevue Hospital in N.Y City!
The Connecticut Training School in New Haven and The Boston Training School at Massachusetts General Hospital also started in 1873 with little fanfare. In 1878, another Boston nursing school, The New England Training School for Women and Children was founded. The schools in Boston and New York graduated some of the most extraordinary, gifted, and well known nursing leaders.
