Florence Nightingale:

Founder of Modern Nursing

On May 22,1820, Florence Nightingale was born to a very prosperous, well-educated and influential English family. In keeping with the Victorian mores of her era, she should have grown to maturity, married and raised her children in obscurity. As we know, that did not happen.

She is one of the most written about women in history. Bright, strong willed and well educated; she persisted in following her convictions. She said she was called into God's service at the age of seventeen, " to do something toward lifting the load of suffering from the helpless and miserable. "
